Ghost kitchen leftovers

The case for a rating system for AI involvement in content generation

Have you ever heard of the term “ghost kitchen”? No, it’s not some spooky place where chefs are replaced by ghosts. It’s where AI-generated content is being cooked up! And let’s face it, you don’t know what’s in your meal until you try it. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Introducing the HumanAI Scale, the ultimate tool for understanding the balance of human and AI involvement in your content.

Imagine you’re scrolling through social media and come across an article that looks intriguing. You start reading it and halfway through you realize, “wait a minute, did a computer write this?” Well, that’s where the HumanAI Scale comes in. We’ve got 6 levels of AI involvement, from “Raw chef” all the way to “Ghost kitchen” and everything in between. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love a good label to help make sense of things?

Aiming to stay true to our kitchen euphemisms, here is a proposal for the 6 levels of the HumanAI Scale:

  1. “Raw chef” – For when the content is prepared entirely by human hands, with no machines involved.
  2. “Mix-master” – When AI is used to assist the human, like a mixer in the kitchen.
  3. “Sous-chef” – AI takes a more prominent role in content creation but still under human guidance, like a sous-chef in the kitchen.
  4. “Robo-chef” – AI takes the lead but with a human quality control, like a robot chef in the kitchen.
  5. “Auto kitchen” – AI generates content independently with minimal human input like an automated kitchen
  6. “Ghost kitchen” – AI generates content with little or no human input, like a ghost kitchen with no one around to monitor or oversee the process.

This is not just about understanding where the content comes from, it’s also about ethical considerations. With AI-generated content on the rise, it’s important to be aware of how it’s being used and who’s behind it. With the HumanAI Scale, you’ll know if that article was written by a human or if it’s just a robot with a case of writer’s block. And let’s face it, no one wants to be reading something written by a robot with writer’s block.

Plus, the HumanAI Scale isn’t just for text content, it can be applied to images and videos too. Want to know how much that incredible video of the robot cooking was edited by a human? The HumanAI Scale has got you covered. Want to find out how much that photo of the model was ‘photoshopped’? The HumanAI Scale is here for you. It’s like having a nutrition label for your content.

Here is a proposal for a possible visual implementation of the HumanAI Scale on WordPress blogposts just like this one. I have turned each level into a reusable block which I can quickly add to the end of each post here on Blueberry Thoughts.

Raw chef – the text content is prepared entirely by human hands, with no AI involved.

Mix-master – the text content is prepared by human hands, using minimal assistance from AI tools (spelling, grammar).

Sous-chef – AI has a more prominent role in the generation of the text content, but still under close human guidance.

Robo kitchen– the text content is generated by AI independently with minimal human guidance or input.

This is of course just a humorous attempt at implementing an otherwise valid proposal. And an attempt from me at creating awareness about the upcoming explosion of AI-generated and AI-enhanced content.

So, next time you’re scrolling through social media or reading an article, keep an eye out for the HumanAI Scale. It’ll help you understand the ingredients in your content and give you peace of mind knowing that you’re not being served a plate of ghost kitchen leftovers.
